A vagina should smell vagina

Your genital area should smell like genitals and discharge can vary both in terms of smell and consistency during your menstrual cycle. However, if you experience an unusual smell that you don’t recognize, contact a gynecologist or health center to find out what might be causing the change.

Causes of a bad vaginal odour

New habits, such as excessive intimate hygiene, mean that many people wash away the naturally occurring lactic acid bacteria in their genital area. This can cause an imbalance in the genital area and result in an unpleasant smell, which might be what you initially wanted to avoid. You should ideally wash the genital area no more than once per day and preferably with a cleanser specifically for intimate hygiene, that doesn’t stress the delicate intimate area.

Sweat can cause vaginal odour

A smell do not always have to come from the vagina, but can also come from the groin and the vulva, the external part of the female genitals. We have sweat glands in the groin and can therefore sweat in this area in the same way we sweat under our arms. Read more about intimate area sweating here.

Instead of washing your intimate area more often, you can use a deodorant adapted for the intimate area, in your groin for a fresh feeling.

Seek help

It is important that you seek help from a gynecologist, health center or contact 1177 when you experience something abnormal in the intimate area, so that you can get the right help.
